46. Planes Of A Pear

"Planes of A Pear"
8x6 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

This is the second of the two paintings I did while procrastinating
on starting that commission. It was fun to just play with color
but now it's time to get to work on the commissioned piece!

41. Fig Tree Beauty

"Fig Tree Beauty"
8x10 Inches
Oil On Gesso Board

SOLD

Just finished this commission for a lovely couple. They provided me with several clippings from their fig tree. I love painting fruit still attached to branches and I love it even more when it has leaves too! I'm hoping to get more clippings from them next season for additional paintings because I don't think I would ever tire of painting figs!

37. Vintage Market Find

"Vintage Market Find"
8 x 10 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

SOLD

This one was really fun and smooth sailing until I got to the closure hardware. It's been sitting on my easel for months because I procrastinated, I just didn't want to start the metal part of it! I felt like the clasp would actually be fun but I was sure the rest of it would be hard work. I finally forced myself to complete it and wow, did I struggle with it! The clasps really gave me a hard time and I almost threw the piece out because I just couldn't get the clasp to work! Eventually it came together and I was encouraged enough to complete it and post it. Sometimes it works that way, the part I think it going to be "fun" almost does me in! As cute as this little "toy" purse is, which I found at a local vintage shop, I'm so glad it's off my easel and that it escaped the "round" file!

35. Yoshi's Ducky Debut

"Yoshi's Ducky Debut"
6 x 6 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

Yoshi's is this great vintage thrift shop here in town. I always find the greatest
things here for my paintings and lately I've been buying up toys from their ever
changing collection. When I saw this little guy I just couldn't resist him, so much
character in this little ducky, and he still squeaks! He was pretty dirty from lots of use
but he cleaned up real well with some Palmolive dish soap and a little bit of scrubbing.
I have a feeling this little guy will be making more appearances in my paintings!

34. Front Yard Camellia

"Front Yard Camellia"
5 x 7 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

The Camellias in my front yard are blooming, a welcome
punch of color during these gray, rainy days! I was inspired
to pull out my big brushes and try my best to be "loose" with
this painting. Another motivating factor was the fact that once
the flowers are cut and in my studio, they just don't last very long!
I had fun with the process and will try it again!

32. From Papa's Tree

"From Papa's Tree"
6 x 6 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

The oranges from my Dad's tree have been extra delicious this year and I've been the fortunate recipient of many of these oranges. Lucky me has been enjoying lots of freshly squeezed orange juice every morning, it's one of my favorite things! I also get to select some for my paintings!

31. "Dig It"

"Dig It"

6 x 6 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

SOLD

I couldn't resist the title for this piece, it was just too perfect. I'm really drawn to
wooden toys like this. I love the simple shapes and primary colors.  Of course that
doesn't mean they're always easy to paint, especially if you throw in some reflections!
I think I was especially drawn to it given that the last week or so has been so gray,
rainy and overcast. It was fun to work on this bright little piece these last few days.

30. Courtesy of "Papá"

Courtesy of "Papá"

6 x 6 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

SOLD

My mom had mentioned to me that at one of the schools where my niece played soccer,
there were some nice persimmons in someone's backyard that hung over the school fence.
They weren't quite ripe yet but she said the next time they went back, her and my dad would cut
some for me for my stillife paintings. A few weeks later they provided some beautiful persimmons
on branches with plenty of leaves. Apparently other folks had noticed them too and my mom told
me my dad had to jump to get these because there were no longer any low hanging fruit, thus
the title "Courtesy of Papá (Papá is Spanish for "Dad".) I loved the colors in these persimmons, beautiful oranges with a hint of red! Thanks Papá!

29. Fresno State Pomegranate

"Fresno State Pomegranate"
6 x 6 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

This pomegranate is from the Fresno State orchards. My mom was the one who noticed the orchards. She suggested that we ask at the Fresno State store, where all their great produce, wine and other products are sold, if we could pick a few. I explained to the store assistant manager that I was an artist, worked from life and would love to have some pomegranates with branches and leaves attached. He kindly referred me to the super nice folks at the Fresno State Agricultural Operations Department and within a couple of days I had some beautiful pomegranates with branches and leaves! A big thank you to the folks at Fresno State!

28. My Close-up

"My Close-up"

Another find from Walter's home orchard. I was surprised at how long
the leaves stayed "fresh" looking. The pear, unfortunately, was no longer
edible by the time I finished the painting!

27. Inside Out, Walter's Figs

"Inside Out, Walter's Figs"
6 x 6 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

I had to do one more rendition of the figs from Walter's home orchard.
I couldn't resist rendering a version with a fig sliced in half, I just loved that shade of
yellow green surrounding the inner part of the fruit. I still haven't tried one!

26. Figs From Walter's Orchard

Figs from Walter's Orchard
6 x 6 Inches
Oil on Gesso Board

A friend of mine took me to her friend's home orchard, what a treasure trove of summer fruit for my paintings! I had my pick of peaches, plums, pears, limes, figs and nectarines to name a few. What a wonderful resource for me as it's impossible to find most fruit with any leaves or branches still attached. Those elements can add so much to the painting. I think figs are so beautiful but I've never actually eaten one except for some fig jam I tried once. I thought the jam had a really "gritty" texture to it and haven't tried a fig since then! However I do like fig newtons : )

These cherries from the grocery store were delicious.
The size and colors of the cherries were so nice I set a few aside
for this painting. These were easy to eat but not so easy to paint!
